No.29 Alverstone heads towards Pier Head from Ryde Esplanade station with an evening train from Ventnor in 1963. The spire of St Johns church is prominent on the skyline. The two tracks in the foreground belong to the pier tramway, operated by two Drewry petrol railcars, one of which can just be seen at the Esplanade terminus.

In th morning sunshine it is possible to get shots of trains coming down the pier from the foreshore. When the author walked to this position the tide appeared to be well out. However, because the foreshore at Ryde is very flat, the tide comes in quickly, and within half an hour - by the time this picture was taken of the Shanklin train, headed by No.16 Ventnor - he was standing ankle deep in water.
